problem with popping sounds in squeezelite

I'm having trouble with squeezelite on a pi2 running max2play (server is on another pi). I have a topping d10 dac attached and am getting annoying low level popping sounds which are obtrusive on tracks with quiet background (solo piano and choral for example). I do not get this problem attaching the topping to a windows laptop runnning squeezelite-x so assume the problem lies with the squeezelite settings.

sorry for the dumb quesion but what it the correct output device?

I've tried most of the d10 ones and they seem to still have the popping. Should I change the buffer settings? -a 80:4::
any ideas? Am I looking in the wrong place?
